A “Mesmerizing” Video Performance in Svadba

A still from self-shot performance footage for Manitoba Underground Opera’s hybrid production of Svadba, directed by Sarah Jane Pelzer.

On August 25 and 27, 2021, Jayne was featured as the bride, Milica, in Manitoba Underground Opera‘s hybrid production of Svadba and Bluebeard’s Castle. In this adventurous double bill, directed by Sarah Jane Pelzer, the events of Ana Sokolović’s Svadba represent Judith’s memories and inner turmoil in Bluebeard’s Castle. The production was premiered for a live audience at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

As Hammond delivers her final, mesmerizing aria from the screen, ringing as an ode to her evaporating singlehood, the chorus of women’s voices rise behind her as though a keening wail for the dead.
